Designing large buildings before and after the invention of statics
Bill Addis is a pioneer in the field of construction history and a highly prominent voice in that domain today. He has authored over 100 publications concerning the history of building engineering, construction materials, and building design. He has written numerous reference works, the most notable being *Building: 3000 Years of Design, Engineering and Construction* (London & New York: Phaidon, 2007), which has since been translated into Portuguese and Chinese. Other books include *Structural Engineering: The Nature of Theory and Design* (1990); *The Art of the Structural Engineer* (1994); *Structural and Civil Engineering Design* (1999) and, more recently, *Physical Models: Their Historical and Current Use in Civil and Building Engineering Design* (Berlin: Ernst & Sohn, 2021). He is a former co-editor-in-chief and editorial board member of the peer-reviewed journals *Construction History* and *Engineering History and Heritage*. Furthermore, for many years he has been a driving force, co-organizer, and scientific committee member for numerous national and international conferences on construction history (held in locations including Cambridge, Cottbus, Paris, Chicago, Brussels, Lisbon, and Zurich), building a robust international network within this academic community over the past 30 years.
Bill Addis studied Engineering Sciences and Philosophy at Downing College, Cambridge, and obtained his doctorate from the University of Reading in 1986 with a thesis titled *Theory and Design in Civil and Structural Engineering – A Study in the History and Philosophy of Building*. From 1986 to 1999, he was employed in the Department of Construction Management and Engineering at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom where he specialized in construction materials and building design. Between 1999 and 2015, he served as a Strategic Sustainability Consultant at the London-based firm Buro Happold, (https://www.burohappold.com/). There, he conducted pioneering work on the reuse of construction materials and components and "Design for Deconstruction"—fields of knowledge that are central to contemporary design and construction practice.
